Only skimming the LUG at the moment as this house move and all it entails is 
involving me more than I expected.

As a retired banker, I have to say that I agree with you, and share your 
sympathies. The banks sidelined any internal opposition to extremely dubious 
lending practices to ensure that their lending committees were a chorus of 
approval shouting yesmen (and women). They were shovelling out their own 
short term European borrowings to long term repayers at minimal margin with 
little analysis of even medium term repercussions, let alone long term ones, 
and opened the trapdoor to chaos.
