It's the last "question" she addresses: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/questions-about-lightroom-and-photo-management/ My mistake was when I exported the images I wanted to work on from my "studio" to my laptop, I then imported them to a larger catalog on my laptop, then exported them to another catalogue after working on them. Now I think I've got it. Thanks to all who've been so helpful.
