People are enacting out of belief what they presume will get them to heaven, it is a ritual - they do not dress up as gods. Religion is anyway a whole different ballgame. That is why I said it is akin to a costume drama, or a play. They can carry very serious messages...whether it is the horror of war, or a longing for days gone and a way of life that has all but disappeared, or of nostalgia for one's roots. All valid.
