Howard,

The 1.4 is super.  The 2x requires you to stop down a couple of stops for 
best sharpness, and with your 80 ~ 400 you are already at 5.6 to start with 
therefore the 2x is not a good choice.  With my 400/2.8 it works fairly 
well.  The new 1.4 is supposed to be even better than the current one.

HI Gene,
I agree 9620 is the  best - because of the shadow of the head and beak on 
the wing. Getting closer is always an option but my hummers are a skittish 
lot - still worth a try. About extenders; the 2X is too soft - the 1.7X is 
just marginally acceptable - and I don't (yet) have a 1.4X which by reports 
is quite good. This is on the 80 - 400 VR zoom which by itself is very good.

Howard,

All very nice, but I like the last one best.  As for cropping, you just have 
to get closer, or use a tele-extender. ;)
