The latter have to pay a fairly substantial amount to the former to register one of the new top-level domains, which they recoup by selling subdomains. Also a major headache for brand owners who now are forced to become registrars, in effect, to avoid that others register their names as top-level domains and then do strange things, e.g. shit.nestle.
