I don't see any lost shadows or highlights in the second which leads me to believe in processing the second you could achieve what you did with the first though perhaps not as HDRish. Selection masks, some black clipping, vibrance, clarity in various sections, etc. A lot more work but then why if you end up close the to the same? KISS :-) The HDR is a beautiful image! Wished I'd taken it (them)!!
