This: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/09/there-is-no-free-lunch-episode-763-lens-adapters summarises the whole problem well and "that great lens certainly wouldn?t be as good as it would be on its native-mount camera" is the perfect one-sentence explanation for what I've seen. The Leitz LTM-to-M adaptors I have aren't adequate to show the best performance of good LTM lenses on the sensor of the M or Monochrom and show assymetrical smearing of the edges. Twice I have had to go through 3 or 4 adapters to get a good (not great) one and that's from reliable brands. Adapting lenses to non-native mounts is all good harmless fun, and I encourage people to use what they have, but a lot of the time for critical work they aren't good enough. I do use my cameras for technical and scientific purposes as well as just general photography, so lots of my gear gets looked at very hard. I have also recently had the mount replaced and helicoid on my e58 Noctilux re-built to make sure everything was properly aligned - but the lens is 36 years old and has been used really hard (as, I think, it should).
