This is a good thought. Details of the implementation vary from raid to 
raid. It is a fairly common practice to place headers meaning hidden 
information on the disk which tells the raid that a disk is one of its 
disks, it's place in the raid and other information to help the raid 
software understand how to deal with the disks if some catastrophic event 
such as removing the disks and putting them back in the wrong slots in the 
raid happens. This may not be the case here, but it needs to be explored.  
If that I the case then the only way around it is to remove the header 
information from the disk. Formatting may not do the job. It might be 
necessary to contact the vendor. 

I have no specific knowledge of the hardware involved, so I can't be of much 
help. Remember that in cases like this Google is your friend.
