I arrived at my posh hotel in the Gangnam district around 7 p.m. local time, after a comfortable 11-hour flight from Rome during which I was able to sleep what amounted to an almost normal night. So I was certainly not going to relax in the hotel. No, I had studies the Lonely Planet guidebook on the plane, and equipped with a subway map, I set out to find the Kwangjang street market--quite far from the hotel, but it seemed worth it and I had very much enjoyed these street markets and the food when I was in Taiwan 2 years ago. So I hoped to find something similar here. First, a snap from the subway, of a couple that could just as well have been on the Barcelona metro: http://www.greatpix.eu/All/Picture-A-Day/4253606_kdsZ6C#!i=2944006386&k=k8p2M8g&lb=1&s=O Then I reached the market and walked around admiring all the amazing foods. These guys flagged me down and insisted that I sit down and have a few drinks with them, as well as some uden-type pasta (but shaped as rectangles) in a delicious spicy broth. The guy on the left was celebrating his 46th birthday. Their English was extremely basis, and my Korean is non-existent, but we managed just fine: http://www.greatpix.eu/All/Picture-A-Day/4253606_kdsZ6C#!i=2944006642&k=WrkwZmK&lb=1&s=O After saying goodbye to my newfound friends, I sat down at this lady's stall to have a kind of pancake stuffed with all manner of goodness and served with some spice veggies on the side. Together with a large beer, the meal set me back the grand sum of 7 Euro or so, and I could have had more if I had found more space in my stomach. The lady was very proud of having appeared in a travel magazine: http://www.greatpix.eu/All/Picture-A-Day/4253606_kdsZ6C#!i=2944006854&k=Kw65hNc&lb=1&s=O A very promising first evening in Seoul.
