I've tried Canon DSLRs - good ones - the IDMII and 5D and top of the line Canon lenses. No thanks. I had the same experience you did with the Nikon. The AF hunts and hunts in the low light and backlight that I like to shoot. It chooses the wrong thing to focus on most of the time. The cameras are heavy and noisy and attention-attracting. The lenses show chromatic aberrations and distortion. For me, it's Leica or nothing, I'm afraid.
