The 300/2.8's are really great lenses, from either Canon or Nikon, but depending on the subject may not be long enough. I stumbled on a really nice used 400/2.8 Nikon lens at a decent price, that is serving me quite well, along with teleconverters. A bit heavy, but works very nice. The other thing is lots of research on your subjects. By the way Canon has a pretty nice 400/5.6(?) lens that is not too expensive. If you go for one of the fast long lenses, also figure on buying a sturdy tripod. Now, if your'e really patient like Doug H. you can get by with the shorter lenses. Of course his skill and great eye certainly helps. ;) Gene ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Carney" <kcarney1 at cox.net> To: "Leica Users Group" <lug at leica-users.org> Sent: Sunday, August 4, 2013 7:04:32 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: [Leica] turles sunning Thanks for looking. I have been interested in wildlife photography, but not too sure how to get started, aside from getting out and looking for stuff. The longest lens I have is the Canon 2.8L 70-200, which at least I think is very good. A 1.4 extender takes it to 280, with evidently good results from what I read. The Canon 300 2.8 is supposed to be excellent, as it should be for $6,800 plus a 1.4 extender to get to 420. One of these days soon I hope.
