Brush strokes, pigment quality, canvas or linen thread count, transparency ? matter to painters. Just as lens qualities, films, sensors, papers, developers, inks, dyes ? matter to photographers. Yes - they're "details." Yes - the details determine how the whole appears to the viewer; whether a discriminating, well informed viewer or not.
