I agree, the D700 is not very bright, neither is the D800 and one of the 
reasons i did not go with it.  The D4 however does have a nice bright 
viewfinder, and works well for manual focussing.

Sorry guys neither the 5DII nor the D700 have acceptable viewfinders nor 
acceptable color discrimination and neither operates the R lens' 
auto-diaphragm.  If I were to use another-brand body it would be the Sony 
A900 and lenses made to fit it.
