If one was merging exposures it would be difficult to not want to try to obtain a trace of detail in that leg. From knee to ankle. But he didn't do it. Either because he couldn't or he thought better of trying to attempt it. Or he put that shot in to try to fool people into thinking he's not playing around the HDR techniques...
