It is also worth taking the desert tours to get away from the concrete. Abu Dhabi has too much money and a sudden thirst to show it off to the world, and those modern Dubai buildings are just empty shells for the most part today. The most beautiful city and surroundings that I have been to in the Arabian peninsula is Muscat in Oman - beautiful, wild landscapes are there for taking in the Wadis that are all around, as well as world class diving. Unfortunately, on my only trip there, I was there just for a couple of days, neck deep in work. It is definitely on my "must go back" list.
