Slimebags have no reputation to protect, and thus the bad experiences..... 

Credit card companies protect your position as their customer.  In the event
EBay or PayPal ( same company, different names) decide against, you, you can
go to your credit card company and really get some muscle behind you.  

Pay cash or by check and you are on your own........

I think I could cause a major NY seller with a reputation to protect so much
grief if they shafted me that they simply would not.
