From what I see on current Sectional Charts, I don't think we could go from Point A to Point B in a simple Cub anymore without violating the airspace rules. When I got my Private certificate in 1958, I was required to demonstrate VOR navigation. I had to rent a Cessna 172 in order to fullfil that part of my checkride.
