I'm not sure if its a rule others belive in or if I just made it up myself but I think its the former... And its this: A 35mm guy or gal has 36 tries at it. A Rolleiflex person 12. A speed graphic person shooting 4x5 has four tries at it. And an 8x10 person one. So they're real carful they don't blink. The shot from the 8x10 could even be a contact print or projection print and its going to have a glow and depth and richness and sharpness that the roll film stuff is just not going to have. You're going to want to look at it even if a decisive moment has not been captured so much. Everything looks so great you just don't care. But the roll film stuff has way more a chance of getting a more decisive better moment of time out of the shot. And it may be grainy and less sharp and have less tonal depth but it could outshine the larger format stuff because the moment it captured is 36 or 12 times more likely to be a much better moment to be looking at. If its a tree you've had many chances of finding just the right angle. So a roll is a roll. Its all fair in the end as its all still 80 square inches of film. The output edited down from 36 or just taken out of that single click you get from a sheet of 8x10 has the same "quality". It just gets that quality from different reasons. To me having 4 tries to get a good shot with 4x5 is plenty. I've done it and I don't feel constricted by it. Now with digital its all blown to hell as we have hundreds to pick from and its not going to really make that much of a difference if we're shooting an D800 or a point and shoot. A terabyte is less than 99 bucks and takes a long time to fill. When I shot film like many pros I never bought film without telephone. I only bought a brick. Never a roll or two. And having a brick means you're going to get the shot. (360 pixs?) Having a roll or two maybe not.
