Florence is tops, no doubt. Consider then San Gimignano and Sienna next, and 
then move on to the Val d'Orcia, places like Montalcino, Montepulciano then 
San Quirico d'Orcia and Bangno Vignone.

This is a well-traveled group.  So, some advice please.  If you had 10
days in Northern Italy, which would be the "must see" places?  Venice
and Florence, I assume are at the top of the list, but after those
places, I'm not sure how to prioritize of what can be done within
those time limits.
