I had gone on New Years Eve for a walkabout in Kancheepuram, a town near
Chennai famed for its temples, and more so for its silk - so much so that
the term "Kancheepuram Silk" is a generic term for high quality silk known
worldwide. We visited three temples, and I will cover them one at a time.
The first temple we visited is the eighth century Kailasanathar Temple,
which is more an architectural site rather than a working temple, but as
you can see below, there are people who come here to pray and leave
offerings. The temple, dedicated to the god Shiva, bristles with complex
sandstone carvings of celestial beings, and more visibly, animals, mainly
lions and elephants, and lion/human combo figures. All photographs taken
with the Nikon D800E and the AFS 24-70 f2.8 lens, which I had borrowed from
a friend to try out:

First the fauna around the place.
