My first drobo is -very- slow but OK since it seems safe and their software keeps me informed of its status, I also have a Drobo S which is blindingly fast connected by eSata this is the one I would have recommended it has just been replaced by a new model. You can add discs whenever you fancy and it sorts itself out in the background.
