A young pianist accented a particular note, and Barenboim asked "Why??". The youngster replied: "Because I like it" The master scorned such an answer and wanted an analytic explanation. Finally, eliciting a reason why that note should be emphasized, the master suggested as an alternative playing the previous note extra softly. All this is to say that analyzing a picture to discuss color vs black and white is not bulls...t. Now as to the ones Lluis posted. Could you imagine an oil color artist looking at that colorless scene and painting it? The entire scene is black and white except for the red head, her scarf, and the sheeting in the boat. If he wanted the red head in color, the picture should have been cropped down to her and the boat. As it is, the color is just jarring. The black and white version is a fine picture.
