Strange as it may sound, the water here has always been too cold for me for swimming because a southerly current parallel to the shoreline causes the surface water to be constantly replaced with cold water from the depths. It's just as well: on hot weekends the freeways are clogged with beachgoers who don't know the water will be unpleasantly cold.
