It looks -- bearing in mind I've lived most of the last 50 or so years in
southern California some of that time across the street from the ocean -- a
wee bit bleak and short on palm trees. Strange as it may sound, the water
here has always been too cold for me for swimming because a southerly
current parallel to the shoreline causes the surface water to be constantly
replaced with cold water from the depths. It's just as well: on hot
weekends the freeways are clogged with beachgoers who don't know the water
will be unpleasantly cold.

Here is another view of my swimming spot on the beach at Bray.
http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/DouglasBray/Seafront/DangerBeach.jpg.html

While the initial approach to the beach seems to show it as very pebbley, it
changes to sand along the shoreline which is a lot easier on the tootsies...

Google Earth gives a fuller flavour of the place http://goo.gl/maps/EU7P3
although streetview obviously didn't take their camera car up on to the
Promenade itself :-)
