And even through the CMOS is of a smaller format to the CCD it gives it a run for its money why? Its a more modern camera. A moot point as the M9 is no longer made. Its not going to give the New Leica M a run for its money not by a long shot. Its not a case of "get I cant afford a real 7 grand Leica M but this $800 cropped body does the trick". And its not going to give the full frame more compact and full frame Sony RX1 a run for it is money. And that's the more interesting comparison. Fuji X 100 versus Sony RX1. And the issue is not that the full frame RX1 makes for better images as obviously its a full frame camera. Its not that the images make the cropped camera images not viable. The issue is why is this 1.5 crop camera so big? Its way bigger than the full frame RX1 with a smaller sensor. Its maybe a tad smaller than a Leica M8. If they're going to make smaller than full frame compacts they are going to have to be truly pocketable. What the RX1 has done is not made the crop cameras not viable. Its made the camera bodies look big. Its made them the camera bodies to be a more proper size for their sensors. And the new, called pro compacts before the RX1 cameras have got to be smaller than the full frame compacts which will be quickly following the RX1. They have to not almost fit in your pocket like an RX1 does. They have to fit in your jeans pocket. Again cropped format photography is viable. The results we get from those cameras compact or DSLR are viable. But the camera bodies these sensors are encased in have to be shrunk way smaller than they are now. The are going to have to put way more though (engineering and design into it) And I think its the RX1 which has shown us that. After they Rollei 35 and Oly XA how many half frame camera came out at twice the size? Twice the size and half the real estate? Zero I think. Why put a half frame camera not quite in your pocket when you can put a full frame camera in that pocket. The same will hold forth for digital cameras in the next two years. If they're going to make smaller than full frame compacts they are going to have to be truly pocketable.
