This is a controversial view, but I think the most "important" art for the 
normal person is the styling (I use the word design to cover the overall 
concept not just the looks) of commercial products. Whether you like or 
appreciate a shark in Formaldehyde or not  you are unlikely to ever see it. 
If you have a beautifully styled hairdryer, cooker, HiFi and so forth you 
can and will appreciate it every day.
The fact that there is not only one example does not make it any less art, 
IMHO, and the fact that very many people benefit makes it important...
