I guess it was a balance between how far you wanted to walk at 3 a.m. and how much you could put up with the aroma. Many years ago when I was working with the local authority on a house improvement scheme I gave a grant for a farm to have inside sanitation to replace the outside earth closet. The farmer was absolutely delighted, but vowed his rhubarb would never be the same again - he used to grow superb rhubarb, and I had a few pies made from it!
