It sounded like the S2 was the better performer, IF you could afford it.
But only slightly, and only under certain user conditions.

D800E is better for sports, high ISO needs, and lower weight (?  Bulk?)
S2 better for color

Like many things, if you have an existing selection of Nikon lenses, Nikon
may sway you over.  If you have no legacy starting place, then maybe $$$
will be the main determinant.  If you have $$$ and want the best lenses
available, bar none, then the S2 wins out.  If you are a Pro and worry about
repair issues, and rental, the D800E wins.

The systems are about 10:1 in price.  

No decision is easy.....
