When I was working for ICL in the '70s, I had a colleague who had papers piled up many inches high on his desk. If you asked him to produce a document, he's say: "September--that ought to be about 1.5 inches down." He'd reach in, and produce the document. Alas, one day the management expected a visit from high brass and, to my horror, they made him clean his desk.
