I think that this is wildly utopian and impractical though and probably has been for 80 or 90 years. "Humanity should reclaim its right to the Olympic Games, kick out the state sponsored brand mafia, and give it back to Greece. Commerce will flourish unhindered by the corrupting influence of massive sprawling urban redevelopment white elephants. And maybe the Greek economy would benefit too". And it was a Frenchman (Baron Pierre de Coubertin) who really invented the modern Olympics! Unless the writer is proposing a return to naked wrestling to injury or even death, male only competition amongst citizen soldiers nearly perpetually at war with each other) and the removal of nearly every sport that actually has interest for global audiences ;-) Without selling television rights there would be no Olympics at all and Greece could never afford nor want to be a permanent host. >From the Athens Games I recall that the level of enthusiasm and engagement from locals was visibly lower (part empty stdiums, unsold tickets) then Sydney for example.
