I think you can bring out the face by darkening and maybe adding contrast by
at least a half stop if not a full stop before it starts looking wrong. The
best thing is to go too far then pull back with the fade tool.
As is with it washed out it looks wrong. The goal is to make it look right.
When you clicked the shutter I bet you could see the guy behind the glass
better than how it came out looking. The goal is  to make it look the way
you originally saw it. For the most part.

You could just use the burn tool but way more controllable and less awkward
is go into mask mode (the pink stuff) and select the face bowl with a brush
or a gradation tool. Then back and optimize it with the curves or levels.
