Of course its location also meant that any invader coming to India by the sea coast was bound to make landfall there: http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/jayanand/India/_1060359-Edit.jpg.html In the same state as Somnath, Gujarat, there is a jewel of a Sun Temple (like Konark), called Modhera which has explicit sculptures inside the inner sanctum - in earlier days we Hindus were not the prudes we have become, and considered sex a normal activity, a symbol for fertility and longevity of the species, and something to be worshipped. It was sacked in a most ingenious way by Allauddin Khilji - he just chopped the hands or feet off all the idols of Hindu Gods and Godesses in the complex knowing that Hindus do not worship desecrated idols. The net effect is that it is pretty well preserved even today.
