Actually, I see that auto tone makes a pretty decent starting point. I can use it or not by selecting auto or reset in the develop panel. If a saved tiff looks funny I can just select reset for it also, in the event the default box becomes checked again in preferences. I have to keep reminding myself that nothing is happening to the raw files. I just went back through Martin Evening's book on LR3 to be sure the other settings are OK, and they seem to have carried over OK from LR3.
