I am very interested in that book and have ordered it.  The
documentary tradition that I learned and have tried to apply is that
you change absolutely nothing for a photo.  I never move anything,
never pose people, never even suggest that they do something over
again.  If I'm lucky enough to get the photo the first time, fine.  If
not, a reenactment does not qualify as documentary photography.  The
reason I stay several days is so that people will forget that I'm
taking photographs and just go on about their lives. Sitting quietly
in a corner with an M camera and a Noctilux, I can be very boring and
unnoticeable.  That's an advantage taking the photos but not promoting
them ;-)
