FWIW it seems to me that for any lens designed for digital, and which does
not fit a film camera, designing the mechanical, electrical and software all
together makes good sense. The lens ends up smaller, lighter and easier to
make/use because software is used to fix some of the aberrations which it
can. This means the various features of the design are optimised all
together.
In fact it seems eminently stupid not to do this.
The only potential down side is that the correct software has to be used in
"development" of the image, no different than fitting the right lens but
easier to get wrong.
The Panasonic micro 4/3 lenses are all like this and the results are super
and the lenses generally small.
