Let me point out that these animals are completely nocturnal - so the rarity is in seeing them, not that they are endangered or anything like that. Our driver, Ken, with 12 years of safari driving in East Africa behind him, had only seen them briefly a couple of times in all those years. They are almost completely scavengers, and this has led to them being unloved across their range (Africa, Middle East and South Asia) because of their purported habit of scavenging from human graves Both the days we saw the pair, the light was crummy, but here goes anyway - the brown mound is the den: Feeding the Cub: http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/jayanand/Tanzania+2012/Tanzania_20120304_06333.jpg.html Cracking Bones (it looked like a portion of an animal skull): http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/jayanand/Tanzania+2012/Tanzania_20120305_07237.jpg.html Play 1: http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/jayanand/Tanzania+2012/Tanzania_20120305_07309.jpg.html Play 2: http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/jayanand/Tanzania+2012/Tanzania_20120305_07322.jpg.html Please see large.
