Well, my experience is exactly the opposite. In 2006 I bought my first Mac,
a second-hand Powerbook G4 (model 2005, I think). It still works perfectly,
of course it is not up to the latest applications, but we keep it as our
"guest computer" for visitors who come without their own laptop or tablet
and want to check their e-mail, browse etc.

I have since bought three new Macs: an iMac in 2008 or 2009, a Macbook Pro
in 2010 (both for myself) and a Macbook Pro for my daughter last May. All
have functioned without a hitch, every day, and none of them has ever needed
to be rebooted except for when required in connection with a software
installation. In contrast, my previous many years of Windows experience
(lasting to this day, since we have Windows at the office) has been marked
by blue screens at least once a week, and various hardware problems,
especially with Dell products.

In a similar vein, between my wife, me and our two children we have acquired
5 iPhones, 2 iPads and 3 or 4 flavors of iPod over the years, and all of
them function perfectly.

Your mileage may vary, indeed.
