If you run your cursor over the histogram, you will see shaded areas that are supposed to indicate the tone ranges that the respective four sliders cover. The one labelled "Exposure" covers the largest range, which seems to means that that range of the histogram shifts more than the other ranges when you move the slider. "Brightness" does seem to move the levels laterally more uniformly, but it isn't all that obvious, and hard to see the difference looking at a picture itself. LR4 seems to have rationalized things. On the beta version, response to sliders is so slow that it is hard to observe effects, but the histogram is divided into four somewhat more equal ranges, labelled (not in order) Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks. The two extra sliders are labelled Exposure and Contrast; perhaps they are meant to simulate exposure changes on film and choices of different film contrasts. I would tend not to touch either of those; if I want to play with contrast, I'd go to the tone curves and probably use the button that enables me to put the cursor on a specific tonal value in the picture itself and brighten or darken all regions of the same value by raising or lowering that point in the curve. I'm pretty sure I'll upgrade to LR4 when it shows up. BTW, I've never used Photoshop. My wife used an early PS until it stopped working on an upgraded Mac OS; eventually she got a late version of Elements that has more in it than the early PS. For anything I do, LR is sufficient; I have a feeling that doing much more than I could do in a darkroom is overkill for my tastes. The one reason I would have for PS would be to remove things like power lines from a picture. It can usually be done in LR, but gets laborious. I once was able, in LR, to remove two strands of barbed wire that were between me and a donkey and the grass behind and in front of him/her, but it took many steps.
