OS X is derived from NeXT, which uses a Mach kernel (the core of an OS, from CMU) with lots of BSD Unix stuff on top. The majorly odd thing about OS X vs. a vanilla Unix or Linux distribution is that OS X uses Objective-C as the prime interface to the OS API vs. plain C.
