Then went a block away to the place that does it. It was interesting talking to them. It sounded like they use a dye sublimation process on to the aluminum that is coated to take the dye. They were impressive in a way. The surface of these commercial prints is very hard and they clean them off with alcohol. Not like the Mary Taylor process on the original link. Didn't take them anything to try, since we are just visiting here and I don't have anything with me. However, my father-in-law is interested and he has a file all ready to take to them when he gets back from camping. Am now using a "metallic" inkjet paper from Red River Paper with good, although less dramatic results. You'[re right, it demands certain images. most of mine have been done for a client that is a contractor that works in refineries, power plants and chemical plants, so it's perfect, but I understand that it is becoming popular with some wedding photogs. But they probably only want something that looks different. There is someone locally that mounts prints on aluminum, and it looks good although hard to hang. I have seen ads for someone that prints on aluminum, presumably with an emulsion coating, but I don't see how they do that. Perhaps like to old emulsion transfer process for canvas? I had a couple of pix done on metallic paper (not aluminum plate) and found that you've REALLY got to have the right image for the process. Otherwise it just looks strange. It doesn't seem to suit me. R.
