I often see abandoned houses, particularly on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. I almost always wonder what happened to the owners. Around here I think that the story is often that the families relied on fishing, crabbing, and oystering on the bay to make a living. The Bay is now both over fished and over polluted. It's very hard for the Watermen and women to make a living.
