Lovely marriage of words and image. It brought to mind some lines from
W.B.Yeats, on an Irish airman's thoughts on his love of flying, during
World War 1:

Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;

The Irish airman referenced is Major Robert Gregory (who actually died
as a pilot in the war), son of Yeats' most important patron, Lady
Gregory.
