I think that is partly why Hasselblad (film) and Leica came out better than
Mamiya/CaNikon - a smaller level of variation due to QA.

My first generation 70-200 2.8 IS certainly wouldn't qualify as "great"
though my particular copy of it performs fairly well on the 5D.
I wonder if this one of those "you might get a good one" situations.
