FWIW, Aram, the Nikkor zoom which is permanently on my D200 is the 24-85 AF-S 3.5-4.5 G (meaning no aperture ring). Looks like a pretty good equivalent of your busted 35-70, and is very compact. Though it's a cheap lens, it's outstanding optically. A little distortion at the w/a end, but otherwise absolutely fine.
