I went out with the same lens today, and made a series of images from f/3.5 to f/16. I found none of these hexes in those images. I have concluded that the original image I posted as The Top must have picked up some internal flare because the lens was pointed somewhat upward. I currently have no shade for this lens, but I may try to find something that will fit. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
