When you import the files from your memory card, you can tell Lightroom to put copies of them wherever you want and sort them how you want and rename them as you want and label them so that you can find anything from thousands of files and make an additional copy elsewwhere and apply a standard developing etc etc ! Or if you have thousands sorted out as you want you can simply tell Lightroom where they are and it will not move them at all but will store all of the info you like for itself.
