However, the level of debt - both personal and sovereign - is enormous as people paid higher and higher figures for property - on borrowed cheap rate EU money - over the years of the Tiger. Logic went out the window as yields plummeted and so called values soared. Now the country is undergoing a massive correction, jobs in certain industries - property, construction, legal, and financial - are disappearing and we are trying to find a new realism. But the basic fact is we have built an enormous over supply of properties and our population is the lowest per hectare in the EU. With emigration renewed as the people formerly employed in the shrinking industries above leave Ireland in search of jobs, the whole correction process is going to take time, but that said we are thriving in the hi tech areas.
