You can sort and rate and key word and do any developing you like (defaults, white balance, crops, etc etc) and export versions to use right away if wanted, then import the catalog with the files into your main computer when you get home. No penalties (everything's reversible) and very likely save you a lot of time once home. Your laptop and optionally an extra copy externally are good backups for your originals as well.
