Owls are unlikely at the camp and IIRC (35 yrs ago) the White-tailed
Ptarmigan's voice is quite deep.  Stalking Ptarmigans is not 'stalking' in
the usual sense.  Most often they're invisible until you almost step on
them.  In Alaska where thre are three species of Ptarmigan one of the best
distinguishig features is the tail color.  Willow and Rock Ptarmigans have
a black tail, White-tailed Ptarmigan obviously white.  The tail feathers
are often covered at rest but sometimes one can reach down and spread the
feathers for ID before the bird walks away.
