Aside from that, I just bought a new Apple laptop for my daughter when I was in San Francisco. I was originally going to buy the white Macbook for $999, but in the Apple store I realized that it is much better to spend an extra $200 and get the entry-level MacBook Pro instead. You get twice as much memory (4 GB vs. 2 GB), the memory in the Pro can be upgraded to 8 GB while the Macbook maxes out at 4GB, the Pro has a larger hard disk, faster chip, Firewire port and a sturdier body. Last year I bought MS Office for Mac for 25 Euro for myself, taking advantage of my employer's Home Use Program agreement with Microsoft, but for my daughter I bought Apple's Pages and Keynote (equivalents for Word and Powerpoint, respectively). Especially Pages is really nice to work with, and its files are fully compatible with Word. I bought the software in the App store for 15 Euro (download).
