As long as the unzipped file m9-1_138.upd is at the root of the card the rest should make no difference. That is the only file used to update the firmware. As far as I can recall I have never had anything other than the one .upd file on the SD card when I have updated my M8 and M9. As an aside another card with an exposure on it to insert it afterwards will assist to resume the numbering sequence un-interrupted but that is a separate issue.
